What rope length?
For beginners, a short rope (16 to 20 m): the rider stays in the smooth part of the wake, which is easier. Once you jump, you lengthen it (21 to 24 m) to land beyond the second wake. Every Connelly rope has three 5 ft (1.5 m) sections to set the length for the boat and the speed. The Classic, the shortest, is made for beginners and children.
Spectra, Dyneema, Poly-E: what is the difference?
Spectra and Dyneema are zero-stretch fibres, light and very strong: the pull is direct and the “pop” off the wake is crisp. The EVA coating on the LG, LGS and Choice stops tangles and makes the rope float. The Poly-E of the Classic keeps a little stretch, gentler for beginners.
The handle
A wakeboard handle is 15″ (38 cm), wider than for water skiing so you can pass it from one hand to the other during tricks. Suede grips well without gloves; synthetic leather is firmer. See also water ski handles and surf ropes.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a wakeboard rope zero-stretch?
So the pull stays constant and the rider pops cleanly off the wake. A stretchy rope stores energy and yanks hard on landing.
Can you use a water ski rope for wakeboarding?
For beginners, yes; but a wakeboard rope, zero-stretch and with a 15″ handle, gives a more precise pull. The Connelly universal rope works for both.
Which wakeboard rope for a child?
The Classic: 55 ft (16.8 m), the shortest in the range, with a soft EVA grip and a low-stretch Poly-E rope.
