Wakesurfing

Wakesurfing means riding the boat’s wave with no rope once you are up. Choose the board by style (cruiser for beginners, surf-style, skim-style for tricks) and by build; you also need an inboard boat that throws a good wave. Connelly 2027 range: eleven boards and four ropes.

Full comparison in wakesurf boards.

The boat

Wakesurfing must only be done behind an inboard boat, whose propeller sits under the hull, well away from the surfer. Never behind an outboard or a sterndrive (Z-drive): the propeller is at the back, a few metres from the surfer, and exhaust fumes build up in the wave.

The boat must also throw a long, clean wave on one side: full ballast and a wake shaper or surf tab make the difference. Wakesurfing speed is slow, around 16 to 19 km/h. Motor Boat 74 is a wakesurf boat dealer: tell us about your boat on +33 4 57 57 27 27.

The surf rope

Short (20 to 25 ft, 6 to 7.6 m) and thick, it is only used to get up and position yourself in the wave: once set, the surfer lets go. See surf ropes and replacement fins.

Safety

In France, the person being towed wears a vest or buoyancy aid of at least 50 N, and the driver has a second person on board to watch them. Riding takes place in the zones and channels set aside for it; on a lake, a prefectural order sets the zones and times. See our lifejackets and buoyancy aids.

The Water Universe shop belongs to Motor Boat 74, a boat dealer in Saint-Jorioz on Lake Annecy: we ride what we sell, and we can advise you on +33 4 57 57 27 27. A product in stock can be collected from the shop within 24 h; the rest are ordered from the manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

Which wakesurf board for a beginner?

A cruiser board, stable and with plenty of volume: the Ride (157 cm), the Spark (designed with instructors, with markers to place your feet) or the Big Easy (168 cm, you can walk on it).

Can you wakesurf behind any boat?

No: only behind an inboard boat, whose propeller is under the hull. Never behind an outboard or a sterndrive, whose propeller is at the back, close to the surfer.

What speed should you wakesurf at?

Slowly: around 16 to 19 km/h. The wave matters more than the speed; it is adjusted with the boat’s ballast and surf tab.

Surf-style or skim-style board?

A surf-style board, thicker, with two to four fins, is fast and carves long turns. A skim-style board, thin with a small centre fin, slides and spins on itself for tricks.

How long should a surf rope be?

20 to 25 ft (6 to 7.6 m). The Connelly Classic and LG Suede ropes are 20 ft, the TORQ and the Choice 25 ft, with 3 ft sections for adjusting.
