One-piece or multi-section rope?
For recreational skiing, a one-piece rope is enough. In slalom, you shorten the rope as you improve: the loops of a multi-section mainline come off one by one. The shortenings are given in feet taken off the starting 75 ft (“15 off”, “22 off”…):
| Shortening | Rope length |
|---|---|
| Full length | 22.9 m (75 ft) |
| 15 off | 18.25 m |
| 22 off | 16 m |
| 28 off | 14.25 m |
| 32 off | 13 m |
| 35 off | 12 m |
| 38 off | 11.25 m |
| 39.5 off | 10.75 m |
| 41 off | 10.25 m |
The handle: shape and grip
A slalom handle is usually 12″ (30 cm): wide enough for two hands, short enough to keep your arms close to your body. A tacky rubber grip holds even when wet; an EVA grip is gentler on the hands. The elliptical grip of the TORQ Course tires the forearms less. Easy-Up handles are designed to make deep-water starts easier. A pre-stretched rope keeps a constant pull, with no elastic effect.
Care
Rinse the rope in fresh water, dry it in the shade and store it coiled: the Connelly rope winder stops it tangling. For wakeboarding and wakesurfing, see wakeboard ropes and surf ropes.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a water ski rope?
75 ft, or 22.9 m including the handle. In slalom, it is then shortened section by section: 18.25 m at “15 off”, 16 m at “22 off”, down to 10.25 m at “41 off”.
What do 15 off, 22 off and 28 off mean?
The number of feet taken off the 75 ft rope. “15 off” leaves 18.25 m, “22 off” 16 m, “28 off” 14.25 m, “32 off” 13 m.
One-piece or multi-section rope?
One piece for recreational skiing; 5 or 8 sections for slalom round the buoys, where you shorten the rope as you improve.
Can the same rope be used for skiing, wakeboarding and kneeboarding?
Yes, with the Connelly universal rope, 15″ handle and 5 section rope. For regular wakeboarding, a low-stretch wakeboard rope is still the better choice.
