How many riders?
See the 1-rider, 2-rider, 3-rider and 4-rider towable tubes. A 3-rider tube also takes 1 or 2 riders, but a tube that is too big for a child on their own slides and skids more. For a family with young children, a covered couch tube with a backrest is reassuring; for teenagers, saddles and deck tubes give more thrills.
What sets two tubes apart
- The fabric: 420D nylon on most tubes, 840D, twice as thick, on the toughest models (Nitro 2, Super Fun 3, Hydro, Ninja 3, Racer 3).
- Two-way towing (Fun, Viper, Hydro, Super Fun 3): the tube is towed from the front or from the back, and the riding position changes.
- The neoprene top (“soft top”): softer, and cooler in the sun than nylon.
- The Boston valve: it inflates and deflates in a few minutes.
- The covered mesh bottom: it drains water, so the tube stays light.
Essential kit
A rope rated for at least the number of riders (60 ft, or 18.3 m), a 12 V inflator that plugs into the boat’s battery, a quick connector and a repair kit: it is all in the towable tube accessories. And a vest for every rider.
Safety and regulations
In France, the person being towed wears a vest or buoyancy aid of at least 50 N, and the driver has a second person on board to watch them. Towing takes place in the zones and channels set aside for it; on a lake, a prefectural order sets the zones and times. See our lifejackets.
Match the speed to the riders: the feeling of speed is far stronger on a tube than on board. With children, go gently and avoid tight turns.
The Water Universe shop belongs to Motor Boat 74, a boat dealer in Saint-Jorioz on Lake Annecy: we ride what we sell, and we can advise you on +33 4 57 57 27 27. A product in stock can be collected from the shop within 24 h; the rest are ordered from the manufacturer.
Frequently asked questions
Which towable tube for children?
A couch or cockpit tube, with a backrest and holding straps: Fun 2 or Fun 3, Racer 2 or Racer 3. Children sit in it, well supported. A vest is compulsory, and keep the speed down.
Which rope for a 3-rider towable tube?
A rope rated for at least 3 riders, so a 4-rider rope: Safety 4, Value Safety 4 or Heavy Duty 4. They are 60 ft (18.3 m) long.
420D or 840D tube fabric?
The figure gives the thickness of the nylon fabric’s yarn. 840D is twice as thick as 420D: more resistant to abrasion and sun, for heavy use.
How do I inflate a towable tube?
With a 12 V electric inflator plugged into the boat’s battery, through the Boston valve. The tube should be firm but slightly soft to the touch: in the sun, the air expands.
Is a vest compulsory on a towable tube?
Yes. In France, every person being towed wears a vest or buoyancy aid of at least 50 N, and the driver has someone on board to watch the tube.
